Horror Movies and Stuff Interview:
Actor/Director Matt Thompson - "Bloodline"

What is a Sharknado?!

Horror Movies and Stuff recently got the chance to talk with Actor/Filmmaker Matt Thompson! Whos supernatural horror flick "Bloodline", arrives in limited release via Osiris Entertainment - at Regal Cinemas...this Friday, September 27th! Thompson Directed the flick, and also stars in it as Brett Ethos. A young seminary student inching toward a priestly life, until he falls away from the church and his curiosities entice him to divulge into worldly pleasures. Pleasures which ultimately lead to the relentless realities of his identity. Tempted to unmask the hidden mirrors of his past, fear consumes him at the site of the haunting reflections, as self-discovery becomes the most terrifying journey of all. Truth is discovered, blood is tainted, and darkness pollutes their fate, as Brett puts his own life and the lives around him in an immense danger as he is torn between his faith and his curse.

Horrormoviesandstuff:Bloodline" is a supernatural-horror film due out this month. Which you direct and also star in. Tell us a little bit about the films story, your character in it, and what horror elements the movie brings to the table. As well as what was behind the decision to not just direct or appear in the film, but to do both?

Matt:I feel like thrillers like Bloodline can grip you in a way no other film can, and I've always been a horror/thriller fan. So, naturally I wanted to film something in it. However, I feel like there is more to Bloodline then just the normal thrills. Brett, my character in the film, is a seminary student going through the motions. He doesn't believe in God or the supernatural, only to find that his own bloodline is cursed by an ancient evil, so it's also gripping from the story side as well.

As for wearing those two particular hats on the movie, it's pretty hard to keep switching in and out of character one minute you're planning the next shot and giving your co-star some directing, then you jump right into a scene with them. I was fortunate to have my good friend and producing partner Michael Reinero as a co-director. He kept an eye on me in the scene and made sure I was delivering the way I should.

Horrormoviesandstuff:When is the official September release date for "Bloodline", and in what capacity will the film see a release? Limited Theatrical, On Demand?

Matt:September 27 we hit cinemas; it's actually the very first theatrical release from Osiris Entertainment - I look forward to making history with them. We're getting a release via Regal Cinemas in the Sacramento region.

Horrormoviesandstuff:When can we expect "Bloodline" to arrive to DVD, and what do you guys have planned as far as extras for the films eventual disc release? Any distributors lined up yet?

Matt:It should be out in December or January on DVD - between 3 to 5 months, I'd say. Osiris Entertainment, who is taking care of the theatrical release - and who have done a great job at that!, are also looking after our home entertainment release. I'm glad everybody will have a chance to see the film.

Horrormoviesandstuff:"Listen To Your Heart" (2010), a Romance/Drama picture...marked your feature-length directorial debut overall. But "Bloodline" marks your feature-length HORROR FILM debut. What made you decide to go from Drama/Musical/Romance, to Horror/Thriller for your next project post "LTYH". And what was it about "this film" in particular that piqued your interest in it?

Matt:I could personally relate to Brett's plight in the film, and some of what he goes through, but also I just wanted to make a good thriller. Having said that, none of this was intentional - I simply go where the stories are. If I feel there's a story worth telling - regardless of the genre - I'll do it. Bloodline's actually one I've been wanting to do for about a decade, long before Listen to Your Heart.

Horrormoviesandstuff:You guys managed to gather together a pretty great cast for this movie. Including one Grainger Hines. Who's appeared in HBO's "True Blood", a few indie chillers movies such as "Beneath The Dark" with Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Josh Stewart...and a few episodes of "Hell On Wheels". How stoked were you that you were able to get him casted into your picture?

Matt:I was very lucky to get the cast I did. Grainer is amazing to work with. I can't say enough good things about him. Wait to you see him in the film, he's brilliant!

Horrormoviesandstuff:Depending on how "Bloodline" does in the marketplace, might we see a sequel? Is this movie set up for a sequel? Any early plans for one?

Matt:I think a sequel could be a lot of fun. We already have an outline for it, so I'd be stoked to see how we could raise the stakes in the next film. Let's pack those cinemas out in Sacramento so we might be having a discussion about Bloodline 2 one day. Ha!

Horrormoviesandstuff:What can Horror Movie Fans expect from your movie? Is this a gorefest? A cinematic acid trip? Or is it a film that blends in just as many strong story elements as it does body count, blood, gore and all that?

Matt:Though it definitely has plenty of scares, I feel Bloodline is more than just a horror movie. We cross genres. We have a very strong story here - encompassing equal pants drama and thrills - and it's one that I believe a lot of people will be able to relate to. The film seems to be appealing to all sorts of different people. Always a good sign!

Horrormoviesandstuff:With "Bloodline" done, now that you've had a taste of the genre...anymore horror projects in the works or early stages after this one?

Matt:I enjoy working in the genre, so I'd say there's a very good chance I'll do more in the horror field. Right now, I'm in pre-production on a new TV series called The Hive.
